Haunted by his past, Harley Grace, a highly successful movie producer, lives a life of luxury and privilege in Los Angeles with his wife, Annibelle. Recently, Harley has developed a neurological disorder which has made him forget his own well-kept secrets. Delusional, he believes he is Cleon, Athenian general, statesman and hero in an original screenplay he controls called Peloponnesia. His housekeeper, Lorna, is his caretaker-lover-constant companion and a fixture in his fantasy world. As a Hollywood luminary, Harley has guarded his privacy, and so his wife has managed to conceal his condition from the town. Still, the Graces' plush nightmare expands. Roy, the screenwriter of Peloponnesia, maneuvers to re-acquire his script, while Lorna and extended family struggle for connection with Harley as he wanders through his Hollywood life convinced it is ancient Greece in wartime and that he is calling the shots in a legendary epic―his own life.

Benedek has a way of chosing just the right words and places for bringing each character to life. Despite their personal flaws or afflictions, and whether or not they are successful or struggling to get by, it is always interesting to climb inside their minds as they reappear in unpredictable ways and are all wound together in this clever story, in some cases without ever meeting. I found myself unable to set the book down towards the end, just to see what would happen next.Product details

PELOPONNESIA edition by Tom Benedek Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
this book reminds me of the writings of Nathaneal West. It is funny, sad and a topsy turvy tale of Hollywood denizens, As the author moved from character to character I found myself wondering what would happen to them next. It is an enjoyable read
Tom Benedek has a gift for creating rich and complex characters. I found Harley tragically hilarious and those around him - their loyalties, fears, regrets and longings - deeply compelling. When they ultimately collide, it's like a savage car wreck you can't turn away from. Benedek probes the secrets families keep and the masks we all wear. This is a terrific first novel from an accomplished screenwriter.
A fantastic book for any fan of connections with classical antiquity and the vulnerability of the human mind. It is an artful articulation of the parallels between success in Hollywood and the politics of early Greece. Tom Benedek, provides all the key elements, multifaceted characters, a great location, colorful conflict and a dynamic plot. A wonderful novel that certainly reshapes the inner core of the workings of Hollywood. Extremely thought provoking and very funny in all the right moments. A must read.
I really got this fine novel and found it one of those books that was hard to put down. It is original -- most of all, I don't know any novel that does this -- exciting, filed with a variety of well drawn characters speaking in different voices, with a complex and interweaving plot and sub-plots. There will be the inevitable comparisons with Nathaniel West's classic Hollywood novel, but "Peloponnesia" stands on its own. Treat yourself to an insightful and enjoyable read.

In this remarkable novel, Benedek has captured the wild world of Hollywood like few books ever have. At the heart of the work is his extraordinary multilayered portrait of Harley, a producer literally driven over the edge by his passion for a great unproduced script. In a wild leap that transcends time and space, he becomes a Greek general who inhabits the screenplay in ways only a brilliant writer could have concocted. Amidst a sea of twisted ambition, infidelity, and inter-ethnic tensions, the novelist has provided us with a perceptive and witty portrait of Los Angeles today. He captures the look and feel of everything from the bedrooms of Beverly Hills to the flatlands cafes where frustrated screenwriters polish their dreams, to the basement halls where twelve steppers desparately try to recover their balance. It's not easy to infuse such a diverse group of characters with vitality and veracity, yet everyone in this book vibrates with an intensity that rings true. It is a sexy, juicy ride until night falls, when things get strange, criminal and mysteriously dark. Moreover, it's a page turner that leaves you wondering how it will all turn out until the satisfying finale. This is an elegant book you'll enjoy and remember. Highly recommended.
